RULES
POSITIONS
PIVOTS These 2 girls (one from each team) set the pace of the “pack.” They wear the helmet with the stripe.
BLOCKERS These 6 girls (three from each team) make up the “pack” together with the pivots. They have two equally important goals: 1) To block the opposing team’s jammer to keep her from getting through the pack and 2) To assist their own team’s jammer in making it through the pack.
JAMMERS These 2 girls (one from each team) score the points. They wear the helmet with the star. Each time they legally pass an opposing team member, they score one point for their team.
THE BASICS
PERIODS Periods are 30 minutes long. A period is made up of a number of “jams.” A jam may last from a few seconds up to two minutes depending on what the girls do.
JAMS A jam starts when the ref blows the whistle (tweet!). That’s when the pivots and blockers start going. These skaters must always stay within 20 feet of each other. Otherwise their blocks/assists are illegal. At the sound of the second whistle (tweet, tweet!), the jammers begin their journey. The first jammer to make it though the pack legally becomes “lead jammer.” The lead jammer may end the jam at anytime by signaling to the ref with her hands on her hips. However, if neither jammer makes it through the pack “legally,” there is no lead jammer. When there is no lead jammer, the jam will last a full two minutes. The ref will blow the whistle four times (tweet, tweet, tweet, tweet!) when the jam is over.
LEGAL BLOCKS It’s true: blockers and jammers are supposed to hit each other. But because most people like their teeth and bones intact, there are some rules to how it can be done. A “legal” block is done when a blocker hits with her shoulders and hips. So… no hands, no fists, no elbows, no feet, or other such foolery.
ILLEGAL BLOCKS Depending on the severity, if a girl breaks the rules, she could get a “minor” foul. After she receives 4 minors, she must sit in the penalty box for 1 minute…. and her team must play without her!! If her foul was really serious, a ref may give her a “major” foul. Majors get a skater put immediately in the penalty box. So sad.
REFS What the ref says, goes… got it? Refs can call a skater out for fouls, back talking, unsafe behavior, insubordination, fighting, etc. A ref can even eject a player from the game. So mind your manners!
