about us
AHOY MATEYS, SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL DAMES!
The Dockyard Derby Dames are Tacoma’s original all-women-flat-track roller derby league. As Roller Derby continues to grow nationally with hundreds of leagues now nationwide, we are proud to be a part of this movement. In fact, there are more than ten leagues in Washington State alone.
Founded in 2005, DyDD has changed from a small group of women with a dream to skate competitively to a four-team functioning league. In addition to the four teams, DyDD also has an all-star travel team which competes nationally. Our dedicated skaters train three to four times a week as well as doing off-skate training.
Who are the Dockyard Derby Dames? As individuals, we are teachers, accountants, mothers, lawyers, nurses, machinists, social service workers, journalists, designers, students, business women, sales associates, hairdressers, counselors, and massage therapists. Together DyDD is composed of over forty athletic, passionate, professional, and spirited women roller skaters devoted to fostering sisterhood and good, clean competition.
Our entire organization is skater run and operated. We consider ourselves a grassroots organization based on democratic processes. This means that our skaters not only spend their time training and becoming better athletes, but also that we plan, operate, and promote our business based on the concept of community.
How do we do it? Each of our skaters participates in at least one “committee,” making decisions and completing tasks for the entire league. From Community Care, to Bout Production, to Rules and Safety, we are professional business members who care deeply for promoting women’s sports.
Monetarily, we support ourselves through monthly dues which pay for a number of our expenses. But it would never be possible without our support from a number of local businesses, sponsors, and volunteers.
